Since I wasn't from the area, I didn’t have contacts yet, people that I could draw on for assistance. So I found a couple of places, looked at a couple of places and there was one that looked okay. I found the rental agency, we filled out all the paperwork, put down a deposit and then I called Hugh to tell him that I had been successful. He hadn’t been able to come down with me. So we were on the phone and he said ‘That’s great. You found a house that has 3 bedrooms and a driveway, it’s affordable. Where is it?’ And I said, ‘Oh it’s two blocks from the beach and you love the beach so this should be good for you. You’ll be able to just walk and go swimming whenever you want.’ He said ‘Okay, what’s the address?’ And I told him that it was on North 2nd Street and there was a silence. And I said ‘I think the area is called Buckroe.’ And then there was another silence. I said ‘Is there something wrong?’ And then there was another silence and he said, ‘Well you know when I was growing up, we couldn’t be in that area after dark.’ So then I stopped talking for a while, I was silent, wondering if I needed to just go back to the place and cancel all the paperwork and retrieve my deposit. Then he said ‘No, no, we’ll try it out. We’ll move in and I’m sure it’ll be fine. So anyway, Bill got the idea that we could help with a camp for kids that needed medical help by selling apple butter. He started this whole program of selling apple butter and so I was the Vice President of the Virginia Jaycees. So Bill was coming to town with his wife Johnny and he said ‘Where can I stay?’ Now, we take for granted you go to a motel, a hotel. But not if you’re black. You’re not welcome. So I said, ‘you’re going to stay with us.’ This is York County, segregation time. So Bill and Johnny spent the night with us. In the morning, as things happened, the girls came out in their robes and Bill and I had on work clothes or whatever and there was a knock at the front door. Johnny said ‘I’ll get it’ and she goes to the front door and here is one of our neighbors. Now this was before the property developments, the little communities. This white guy is standing there, one of our neighbors, his eyes got bigger than saucers, his jaw, I’m telling you physically he was about to have a heart attack. Here was this black girl in her robe at Dr. Levy’s house answering the door first thing in the morning. Haha. We were told some places that you can’t go, you know, as students. One of those was Fox Hill. And they told us about the beaches, Buckroe one side and Bayshore the other side. Bayshore was for the African Americans. And Buckroe was for the whites. And we went down to Bayshore, we had parties down at Bayshore. But we couldn’t go to the other side. I wasn’t used to any of that! It was like, oh my gosh! You know, I got an education. And it was also my first experience being called the n-word. To my face. Now I’m sure people may have said it to me, about me, but to my face, that was the first time. It was at the Coliseum Mall. I had one of my homeboy’s cars, he let me use his car to go to the mall, and this young lady pulled out in front of me, and I blew my horn, cause I didn’t want to hit her, cause she wasn’t looking. And so she pulled around and she called me the n-word, and I went off. I mean it was just natural reaction. I put my car in park, and I ran over to her, and I grabbed her steering wheel, and I looked in the back, and there was a baby in the backseat. And I’m like, ‘Shallae, you can’t do this.’ And I just said to her: ‘you need to be careful about what you say to people.’ And, I said, ‘and your baby, or whoever’s baby that is, saved your life.’ That’s what I told ‘em. And I got back in my car. And I called my mom, and I was cryin. And she said, ‘calm down, baby, calm down.’ She said, ‘you’re in the state where it all started. Virginia. The Confederacy.’ She said, ‘so let me talk to you a little bit about what you’re going to experience.’ She was a teacher, and she just knew how to do it. She knew how to talk to me, calm me down. Told me how to, you know, deal with some things. And we had a long conversation. And that helped. That helped because I did not know how I was going to react. I’d never been exposed to that, you know. And my wife came down and my first son was born at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After she got there, we moved off of the base into what we called civilian quarters. So my son was born while I was there at Fort Rucker, and of course the guys in the outfit treated us royally, they bought seats and bottles and diapers and all that kind of stuff… I do remember one incident, there was some crime that was committed and the police were going through neighborhoods seeing if there’s anyone who can help identify the crime. They knocked on my door, as a civilian, and they said, ‘What’s your name boy?’ and I said, ‘George Wallace.’ ‘Come on, don’t be fooling me, what’s your name boy?’ Well George Wallace was the governor at that time in Alabama, so I produced my credentials and they said ‘All right’. That made me know that while I was there and my son was born in Alabama, he was not gonna be a George Wallace the III. I’m honest with them, I tell them. In fact, on the first day of school, I don’t know if a lot of administrators would agree, but I actually share with them about my background. I tell them that I'm telling them this because my background informs the way I do life, my worldview, and how I do education. It helps shape the way I relate to them... Of course, some of the kids try you. I think you might have one or two in the clinic, and then [there was] a mobile restaurant that some black folk had. They called them ‘Meat Mommas’. They would bring a cart of food, hot food, down to the Shipyard right outside the gate. So when the whistle blow for twelve, the workers could come there and buy that food.” Pat Taylor: “That was the beginning of the trucks that you see now. And women did that mostly, on their own. They would come over there, and feed people at the particular gates that they had with their lunch sandwiches and things like that. That was the beginning of entrepreneurship, of owning your own business. And that’s a thing too, we did a lot of that, where women could intervene. The women were like this because they had to be.
